Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Police Commissioner, has warned that police risk being outwitted by tech-savvy criminals who exploit artificial intelligence without adhering to legal restrictions. In an article for The Telegraph, Britain's most senior officer said anti-AI campaigners calling for bans and tighter regulations are holding forces back from using technology to fight crime. He also stated that slow and risk-averse public sector procurement rules further delay the deployment of essential technological tools. The warning comes amid a dispute with Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan, who blocked a £50 million deal for the Met to process intelligence using AI software from US firm Palantir. The Met insisted the process was legally compliant and warned that blocking it could cost front-line jobs and delay system upgrades by several months.
