A Derbyshire Police detective has been suspended and placed under criminal investigation after allegedly using an AI chatbot to generate biased evidence and case documents. The officer, who worked on rape investigations and other criminal cases, allegedly prompted the software to produce victim impact statements and case summaries tailored to secure specific charging decisions. A number of rape convictions are now under review, with the Crown Prosecution Service liaising with courts and defence lawyers, although no arrests or formal charges have been made against the detective. Following the incident, the head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council's PoliceAI unit, Alex Murray, requested that several forces pause using AI to prepare court documents while safeguards are established.
