The Goodyear Police Department in Arizona has begun using artificial intelligence to generate photo-realistic composite images of suspects from witness statements. Officer Mike Bonasera tested the generative chatbot ChatGPT for sketches before receiving approval from department leadership and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to use the tool in active cases. Investigators recently issued an AI-generated image linked to a November shooting to boost public engagement, noting that traditional pencil drawings are frequently ignored by the public. While legal experts warn that the technique may face courtroom scrutiny and legal challenges, the police emphasise that the images serve only as investigative tools rather than arrest-level evidence.
