The first Canadian police service, and among the first anywhere, to trial facial recognition built into body-worn cameras rather than fixed or handheld devices. Axon supplied the camera hardware and Israeli firm Corsight AI the facial recognition model. The pilot ran through December 2025 and was extended roughly three weeks into January 2026 following a system outage. Officers' cameras ran the software in what EPS calls silent mode, checking faces against a watchlist of people with outstanding warrants for serious offences or flagged as high risk, reported variously as roughly 6,341 and 7,000 people, without alerting the wearing officer to a match; footage was reviewed afterwards by trained staff. Status note: the pilot itself concluded in January 2026 and results were with the Edmonton Police Commission and the chief's committee for review. This entry is deliberately held at trial rather than moved to discontinued, because a concluded pilot awaiting a decision is not the same as a technology that has been abandoned, and no decision either way has been published. Two independent research passes reached opposite conclusions on how to classify it, which is itself a reason to record the underlying facts and let the status follow a documented decision rather than an inference. A researcher at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab described it as the most high-risk algorithmic surveillance program she had observed in Canada to date. Corsight AI's technology has reportedly been used for mass surveillance in Gaza, and the firm also supplies Essex Police in England. Axon's own AI ethics board recommended in 2019 that the company not pursue facial recognition on body cameras.

US Department of Justice research documents both products as operational: body-worn camera audio is transcribed and a generative AI model produces a first draft report, which the officer must review, amend as needed and sign. Both systems work from audio only, not the camera's visual footage, according to the DOJ's own description. This differs in kind from a general-purpose assistant like Microsoft Copilot, which the site already tracks separately: these are purpose-built for report drafting from a fixed audio input, not a general chat tool applied to policing tasks.

Used for periods when multiple callers report the same incident, such as a road collision. The AI assesses incoming calls and identifies those relating to an incident already known to the emergency communications centre, allowing human call-takers to prioritise calls requiring intervention. Human staff remain responsible for calls needing emergency intervention. Carbyne and the district describe the technology as having processed more than 3,500 events during a 90-day period and reduced redundant calls by more than 30 percent among the calls it triaged. These are vendor and customer reported figures rather than independently validated efficacy measures. Axon announced a definitive agreement to acquire Carbyne on 4 November 2025 for $625 million, closing in Q1 2026 per Axon's FY2025 shareholder letter. Axon separately acquired Prepared (see the AI Emergency and Non-Emergency Call Triage entry) in late 2025; the two now anchor a combined product line branded Axon 911. This concentrates a striking share of the US emergency-response AI market in one vendor -- Axon now owns Carbyne, Prepared, Fusus, Draft One and Axon body cameras.
