Trump administration illegally retaliated against Anthropic, judge rules

A US judge has ruled that the Department of Defense acted unlawfully when it designated artificial intelligence startup Anthropic a supply chain risk. The Pentagon ordered firms working with the military to boycott the company after Anthropic refused to let its AI models be used for surveillance or autonomous weapons. Anthropic argued in a lawsuit that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth overstepped his authority, marking the first time an American company had received the designation. US District Judge Rita Lin said national security was not a blank cheque to punish and retaliate against government critics. Anthropic welcomed the decision, while the BBC has contacted the Pentagon and the White House for comment.
