The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a two-day public workshop on 24–25 June 2024 to examine law enforcement's use of person-based and place-based predictive policing strategies. These data-driven approaches attempt to enable crime prevention by identifying individuals who are likely to commit crime or locations where criminal activity is likely to occur. Organised by the Committee on Law and Justice alongside the Computer Science and Telecommunications board, the event examined how these methods are deployed across federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial jurisdictions. Participants explored the accuracy and legal precedents surrounding these technologies, alongside concerns regarding privacy, civil rights, civil liberties, and disparate impact. A designated rapporteur will subsequently produce proceedings summarising the presentations and discussions in line with institutional guidelines.
