How could facial recognition technology differ from CCTV?

Supermarkets could soon use facial recognition technology to monitor customers, raising privacy concerns. Unlike standard security cameras, the system scans distinct facial features, such as the distance between someone's eyes or forehead and chin, to create a detailed map called a biometric template. According to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, this template is then compared against existing records to verify or identify individuals. While some people already use facial recognition on their phones, the technology is also deployed at Australia's international airport SmartGates to check identities against passports.
