Police in Nagpur district used an artificial intelligence platform to identify an alleged killer and an elderly victim after her decomposed body was discovered on farmland in Patansawangi village on June 28. Although the incident was initially registered as an accidental death, a post-mortem examination revealed the woman had been sexually assaulted and murdered, prompting a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. With no eyewitnesses and only a blurred frame from a distant CCTV camera, investigators used MARVEL—Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement—to reconstruct the victim's face and enhance the suspect's image. Guided by Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police Harsh A. Poddar and Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Mhaske, the team also combined telecom data analysis and digital forensics to identify the accused within days.
