Florida is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to assist local police in tracking immigrants, with most of the state business going to San Francisco-based firm Peregrine Technologies. Under an agreement with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Peregrine provides software that integrates data sources such as arrest records, body camera footage, and licence plate images into a single application. State budget language directs at least $6 million towards the technology, while millions more in state grants have been awarded to over two dozen local agencies to purchase the software. The deals have raised concerns among civil rights advocates over privacy violations, as well as criticism from government watchdogs regarding potential conflicts of interest linked to the firm's lobbying ties to Governor Ron DeSantis.
