The police department of Roseville, California, has found that AI surveillance cameras misread licence plate numbers in 71 per cent of cases. An analysis of nearly 1,500 reports showed the system mistook numbers such as a nine for an eight, repeatedly flagging an innocent car as stolen. Flock Safety says independent evaluations show its technology has a 96 per cent vehicle count accuracy rating and correctly categorises 92 per cent of vehicle types. However, the company provides little data on licence plate recognition, though the AI system may have improved since the police study was carried out.
