Cheshire Constabulary will deploy Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology in Chester city centre on Saturday, July 11. The deployment aims to help officers identify wanted individuals, outstanding suspects, and people who pose a risk of harm as visitor numbers rise for Chester Races. The LFR system alerts officers in real time if someone on a pre-approved watchlist passes through the scanned area, while biometric data of non-matching passers-by is automatically and immediately deleted. Officers must review and confirm the identity of any potential matches before taking action. The constabulary stated that strict privacy, data protection, and human rights safeguards are enforced, and officers will be available to discuss the technology and listen to public concerns.
